Chinese writer

Jia Pingwa's inscription for the China-Canada Writers Association: Write every sentence of Chinese characters well.

[Chinese News, Toronto] Pang Jin, Vice President of the Canadian Chinese Writers Association, recently paid a special visit to Mr. Jia Pingwa, a giant of contemporary Chinese literature, during his vacation back in China. During this meeting, Jia Pingwa inscribed a message for the Canada-China Writers Association: “Write every sentence of Chinese characters well.” This conveys Mr. Jia Pingwa's earnest expectations for overseas Chinese writers.

At this time, the plane tree leaves in Xi'an are verdant, and the scent of tea fills the study of the great writer. Mr. Jia Pingwa picked up his brush and calligraphy, and the fragrance of ink spread across the rice paper. The eleven characters flowed like a clear spring over stones, containing his deep expectations for overseas Chinese writing. Within this ink and brush are entrusted wishes, inheritance, and even more, a guardianship of culture.

Seeing the inscribed photo sent by Pang Jin, Yan Fei, president of the Canadian Chinese Writers Association, gazed at it for a long time, and couldn't help but feel full of emotion: ”These eleven meaningful characters are like starlight crossing the ocean, illuminating the path ahead for overseas writers. Mr. Jia Pingwa's inscription is as heavy as a thousand pounds, yet as gentle as spring rain nurturing things silently. Each Chinese character is a seed that we must carefully nurture in the soil of a foreign land, allowing them to take root and sprout in the cross-cultural soil, blossoming into unique flowers. This care is like a warm current across the Pacific, warming the hearts of us writers who navigate between two cultures.”

This friendship has a long history. On the occasion of the 2025 election of the China-Canada Writers Association, Jia Pingwa, along with other literary heavyweights such as Jiang Zilong, Han Shaogong, Xiaojian, Gao Jianqun, and Jiang Yibin, sent their congratulations. For many years, these literary elders have always watched the growth of this overseas Chinese literary organization with a benevolent eye, witnessing every step of the China-Canada Writers Association's development.

President Yan Fei stated that this inscription will become the motto of the Canada-China Writers Association, inspiring all members to strive for excellence in literary creation, to inherit and promote Chinese culture overseas, and to build bridges for cultural exchange between China and foreign countries with every carefully crafted sentence.

“In the context of globalization, overseas Chinese writers bear a unique cultural mission.” President Yan Fei stated, “Master Ping'ao's inscription reminds us that no matter where we are, we must maintain a reverence for Chinese characters and a sincere heart for literature.”

This calligraphy, with its powerful strokes that pierce the paper, has transcended the physical boundaries of ink and paper, becoming a spiritual bond connecting literary sentiments across the two oceans. It will undoubtedly inspire the Canadian Chinese Writers Association to go further and more resolutely on the path of promoting the overseas dissemination of Chinese culture.
