350 Chinese seniors gather in Markham, mayor praises unprecedented Christmas lunch and learning party held successfully
(Chinese News Net, Markham News, Compiled Contributions) The "Christmas Lunch Learning and Party" jointly organized by the Markham District 6 Senior Citizens Association and Markham Councillor Amanda Yeung Collucci was successfully held today at Grand Royal Banquet. The event attracted over 350 Chinese seniors, creating a lively and warm atmosphere that was grand and festive, becoming one of the most representative senior community events in Markham's history.

This event combines festive gatherings with practical public information lectures, allowing seniors to enjoy the holidays while also acquiring important information relevant to their daily lives.
Regarding transportation, representatives from the York Region Transit Authority provided seniors with a detailed explanation of transportation discounts, noting that seniors can ride public transit for just $2.52 and seamlessly connect to transit systems in Toronto and other cities, greatly enhancing travel convenience.Additionally, York Region Transit offers door-to-door transportation services, providing seniors and those in need with a more convenient and safe transportation option.
In terms of housing support, the event also introduced York Region Housing Programs. Representatives from relevant departments clearly explained the eligibility criteria, waiting list procedures, and related conditions for public housing and seniors' housing to the seniors. This helped seniors gain a more comprehensive understanding of the available housing support, enhancing their living stability and sense of security.
In terms of cultural programs, we were honored to invite Master Zheng Zujie, a national-level inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Chinese Wing Chun, to grace the event with his presence. He delivered a spectacular Wing Chun demonstration, showcasing the spirit of Chinese martial arts—a harmonious blend of hardness and softness, and the cultivation of both inner and outer strength. The national-level inheritor also personally led several elderly participants in practicing basic Wing Chun movements, allowing them to experience firsthand the health preservation principles and cultural charm of Wing Chun. The event was met with thunderous applause and a vibrant atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Councilor Yang Qiqing solemnly introduced the national-level Wing Chun inheritor to the local Chinese media present. Many Chinese media outlets showed strong interest, and reporters took photos with him and conducted in-depth interviews, further promoting the exchange and inheritance of traditional Chinese culture in the local community.

On that day, the Mayor of Markham, Mr. Frank Scarpitti, also attended the event and interacted cordially with the seniors. In his speech, the Mayor stated that in his many years in politics, he had never seen so many Chinese seniors in Markham gathered together at once, and the scene was deeply impressive. The Mayor also highly praised the community cohesion demonstrated by the event and pointed out that Councillor Yang Yiqing has been deeply involved in the community for many years, building strong relationships with the seniors. Her personal charisma and strong pull were key to the success of this event.
Additionally, Dr. Wu, Chairman of the Markham Chinese Canadian Association, also attended the event, interacting with many community members and adding professional strength and community connection to the occasion.

Councilor Yang Qiqing stated at the event, "Seniors are the most important cornerstone of our community. They have dedicated their lives to society, and it is very meaningful to see so many seniors gathered here today, learning practical information and interacting with each other through cultural events and celebrations. In the future, I will continue to fight for more resources for seniors, so that they can live more securely and with greater dignity in Markham." Yang Yumei, president of the Markham Chinese-Canadian Association for Seniors, said, "The Markham Chinese-Canadian Association for Seniors has always been dedicated to serving seniors, and we are deeply moved to see everyone participating enthusiastically and interacting with each other. In the future, the association will continue to organize more activities that benefit both body and mind, allowing seniors to live healthier and happier lives in the community."
Langyi Garden was invited today to give a speech, showcasing its unique advantages as a well-known local private senior care institution to the elderly. For those facing long waiting lists at public nursing homes, or for families hoping to move their elders into a care facility quickly, Langyi Garden offers a warm, professional, and efficient option, allowing seniors to immediately enjoy attentive care and a comfortable living environment. Whether for daily care or professional nursing, this is an ideal place for seniors to live out their golden years with peace of mind.

The head of the Harmony Group Center also appeared at the event, introducing the services of the Harmony Charity Foundation, including health management, social activities, and professional support, to help seniors meet their different needs and create a safe and comfortable living environment.
Through the explanations and cooperation of two institutions, elders can gain more options for elder care and immediately understand available resources, improving their quality of life and sense of security.
At the end of the event, Councilor Yang Qiqing surprised everyone by singing the classic song "A Galloping Life" with the seniors present, sharing a moment of joy and bringing the atmosphere to a climax. The seniors clapped and sang along to the melody, with laughter and applause filling the air, creating a warm, joyful, and perfectly positive ending to the entire event. After the event, many seniors highly praised the content, deeming it both practical and meaningful. They not only learned useful life information but also fully experienced the festive atmosphere and cultural immersion.

In summary, this event of dining and learning with the elderly not only provided them with ample practical and clear information but also allowed them to grasp important resources such as transportation, housing, and support services all at once. The elderly left with fulfillment, fully embodying the community's care and support for the elderly.
