Famous writer Xiao Jian meets Canadian Chinese writer Yan Fei; several renowned writers attend symposium and banquet.

(Haikou News from Huawen Net, reported by Ai Fei) Recently, Yan Fei, president of the Chinese Writers Association of Canada, visited Hainan. Renowned writer Xiao Jian met with Yan Fei, and together with over a dozen well-known Hainan writers, they engaged in lively discussions. Many old friends raised their glasses in good cheer, talking about literature and Hainan, as well as literature and the world. The symposium and banquet resembled a small literary salon.
Writers attending the meeting and forum included: Peng Tong, Vice Chairman of the Hainan Writers Association; Huang Xinli, Chairman of the Haikou Writers Association; Tang Yan and Zeng Wanzi, Vice Chairmen of the Haikou Writers Association; Han Shaoyi, Editor-in-Chief of "Coconut City" magazine and former Vice Chairman of the Haikou Writers Association; Ye Haisheng, former Vice Chairman of the Haikou Writers Association; Mo Xiaoming, Vice Chairman of the Haikou Writers Association; as well as well-known artist and former art editor of "Coconut City" Huang Haiyang; and former Xinhua News Agency reporter Yang Fei. They jointly attended the forum and dinner for the meeting between famous writer Xiao Jian and Canadian Chinese writer Yan Fei.

Xiao Jian is a writer who, along with Liang Xiaosheng, Shi Tiesheng, and others, gained fame during the "educated youth literature" craze of the 1980s. He has been writing diligently for decades, with a prolific output that makes him a master-level renowned writer. He is also the founder of the Xiao Jian Youth Literature Award in Hainan Province.
Xiao Jian's literary creations span multiple fields, including full-length novels, collections of novellas and short stories, and screenplays. His representative works include "Youth Rhapsody," "A Generation," "Earthly Fate," "The World," and "Secret Records of Chinese Educated Youth From the Cultural Revolution," among others. Among these, "Earthly Fate" depicts the social changes and tragedies of human nature in rural China and is considered one of his representative works. In addition, Xiao Jian served as the Vice Chairman of the Hainan Provincial Writers Association, worked as a reporter for Beijing People's Radio Station, and hosted popular programs on Hainan Television. He has delivered speeches and lectures on multiple occasions, sharing his insights and experiences on the development of Hainan literature.
Xiao Jian is not only a prolific writer but also actively participates in the establishment and promotion of literary awards; he played a leading role in establishing the Xiao Jian Youth Literary Award at Hainan Normal University. Through these efforts, Xiao Jian has made significant contributions to the advancement of literature in Hainan and across the country.
Writer Yan Fei, also known as Yan Da Xia, is a Chinese-Canadian writer and the current president of the Canadian Chinese Writers Association. In his twenties, Yan Fei published a full-length novel in "October" magazine. His literary works were extremely popular in the mid-1990s, especially his trilogy of non-fiction novels: "Hainan No Dream," "Hainan Startled Dream," and "Hainan Seeking Dream." These books were bestsellers nationwide and became iconic literary works of the period when Hainan was developing into a province in China.

Besides his identity as a writer, Yan Fei actively participates in cultural exchange activities. For example, he recently gave an online lecture on literature at the invitation of a literary society at a Canadian university. In the lecture, he discussed the relationship between the Nobel Prize in Literature and Chinese writers, focusing on Wang Meng, a leading figure in contemporary Chinese literature, as well as other Chinese writers closely associated with the Nobel Prize, such as Shen Congwen, Han Shaogong, Bei Dao, Can Xue, Yu Hua, Wang Anyi, and Yan Lianke. Additionally, several years ago, Yan Fei held a thematic sharing session titled “Literature and the Distance: From Hainan to North America” in Haikou, showcasing his literary journey from Hainan to North America. He has traveled the world for many years, with his footprints in numerous countries and regions, adhering to the life goal of "reading ten thousand books and traveling ten thousand miles." Through various forms of cultural exchange activities, Yan Fei has promoted mutual learning and integration between Chinese and Western cultures, making significant contributions to fostering exchanges in Chinese and foreign literature.

All participating writers are good friends of Yan Fei and have achieved a certain success in their literary careers. Novelist Tang Yan is a dark horse in the literary world in recent years, with representative works including the novels "Original Sin Paradise Island," "Island City Past," and "White Sand Gate." Both diligent and prolific writers Zeng Wanzi and Han Shaoyi are powerful authors. Zeng Wanzi's representative works include the novels "Watching Women" and "Red Rain Pavilion," while Han Shaoyi's representative works include the novels "City Without Dreams" and "Restless Years." Literary scholar Huang Xinli's representative works include "Strumming of Sentiments" and "Walking and Seeing." Writer Ye Haisheng's representative work is "Seafarer's Notes." Poet Peng Tong's representative work is "Sinking Fragrance Love Affair," and Mo Xiaoming's representative work is "Youth in the Wind," among others. Renowned painter Huang Haiyang's paintings were once highly sought after, and he also serves as a visiting professor at Hainan University. Yang Fei from the former Xinhua News Agency is a knowledgeable scholar.
Old friends gathered, without regard for host or guest, raising glasses and talking joyfully. Everyone spoke together about literature and Hainan, literature and the world.
