The Zhou Enlai Foundation and the Chinese Canadian Writers Association jointly organized a parent-child reading and exchange event for "The Old Man and the Sea."
(Toronto News from Huawen.com Special Correspondent Luo Yangfu) On the afternoon of September 6th, the “Parent-Child Reading of Literary Classics Exchange Meeting,” jointly organized by the Zhou Enlai Foundation and the Canadian Chinese Writers Association, and co-organized by Better Education and Shuang Kuai Chinese, was successfully held at Better Education in Richmond Hill. This event served as both a summary of the achievements of the "The Old Man and the Sea" parent-child reading program during the summer of 2025 and a sharing session for family reading and literary reflection.
On that day, nearly twenty families participating in the joint reading gathered with guests from Toronto's literary and educational circles. Guests included Yan Fei, President of the Chinese Writers Association of Canada; Zhao Min, Secretary-General of the Zhou Enlai Foundation; Helen Gao, Dean of the Toronto International Education Institute; Gu Tu, President of Lakeside College Canada; Martha, founder of Little Elephant Media Canada; Echo Liu, founder of Shikaiqi Publishing House; Liu Siyuan, President of the Canada-China Cultural Artists Association; Hao Wei, veteran overseas Chinese teacher and media writer; Li Yan, President of Value Life Financial Planning Inc. Canada; Richard Yang, representative of Ivy League parent; Lili Cheng, veteran media personality; Feng Wenjun, office assistant of the Canada-China Writers Association; and Liu Zuhua, Vice Principal of Gengyou Education. These guests attended and participated in commentary and speeches.
Before the meeting, clips of parent-child reading were shown, reviewing cherished reading times together.
The exchange session kicked off with opening remarks from the hosts, Zhao Min and Yan Fei. The guests emphasized the significant value of shared reading between parents and children in cultural inheritance, spiritual nourishment, and family education.
Following that was a sharing and review session. Students including Kong Kong, Luo Mingcheng, Jin Yufei, Zhou Zihan, You Luojia, Xie Yongru, Zhou Ziqin, and Ye Tongtong spoke with sincere and fluent language about the “perseverance” and “bravery” they learned from Santiago. Parents, such as Ye Tongtong's mother, Liang Ruiyuan's mother, and Zhou Zihan's mother, shared how a deepened parent-child relationship was fostered through shared reading experiences. The guests' comments were concise and pertinent, affirming the children's reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
The event also presented awards such as “Creative Reading Master,” “Best Parent-Child Reading Partners,” and “Best Reader” to outstanding families and children, encouraging everyone to continuously explore and grow through reading. During the special session, guests including Echo Liu, Hao Wei, Richard Yang, and Liu Zuhua offered practical and insightful advice on topics such as parent-child reading, family education, literary reading, and comprehensive literacy.
The exchange, originally scheduled for two hours, was extended by nearly an hour due to enthusiastic participation. The attending families expressed their hope that such events could be held regularly, allowing more people to experience the charm of classic literature and gain wisdom and strength through reading.
The organizers stated that they will continue to promote parent-child reading in the new semester and invite more families to participate, allowing the fragrance of books to permeate the community and literature to illuminate life. The atmosphere of the entire event was warm and enthusiastic, adding a bright literary touch to Toronto's late summer cultural life.
The exchange meeting was hosted by Luo Yangfu, co-founder of Gengyou Education and principal of Shuangkuai Chinese.
