He used the examples of immigrant numbers and works by famous writers to illustrate how existing immigrant literature, like “a mountain,” possesses cross-era aesthetics and resonance, thus withstanding “rereading.” With the advent of the information age and artificial intelligence, which are advancing at breakneck speed, why do many world-renowned literary works from ancient and modern times, both Chinese and foreign, still show their limitations, “stopping halfway up the mountain” and unable to find a way forward? Only Tolstoy can be considered to have reached the summit, profoundly contemplating the sin of war, interpreting the preciousness of peace, and the dialectical unity of war and peace in “War and Peace.” In “Anna Karenina,” while advocating for individual liberation, he also championed the establishment of order. Despite self-contradictions, his efforts to contemplate the general trend of human civilization's development are clearly visible. He used evidence and allusions to explain that literature is the study of humanity, and it is society that shapes individuals in various ways. How writers can take a new step like Tolstoy is both a call of the times and the expectation of readers. Especially today, as Eastern and Western developments increasingly converge, and values are also heading towards the same destination through different paths. And all of this can be better witnessed by “immigrants” who have “gone abroad,” as they have not only “heard and seen” but also personally experienced it. What is true modern civilization? What is the shaping of individuals? It seems that only “immigrants” can explain it more clearly. Chinese immigrant writers must break out of their limitations and think more about how “those things” came to be. A famous quote needs to be savored: “The direction of historical development is the result of compound forces.” If one remains immersed in the achievements of “small successes” from individual struggles, with a mind full of “small visions,” “small feelings,” and “small sentiments,” it will be impossible to gain a bird's-eye view and look far ahead to survey the current era. And today's "immigrant literature" presents a vast space before us. While the milestones set by the ancients are undoubtedly famous and unshakable, in the face of the calls and challenges of the times, for literary writers among the more than 60 million Chinese immigrants worldwide: "All have passed, but for true heroes, look to this day!"
Pang Jin, vice-chairman of the China-Canada Writers Association, is not only a literary powerhouse but also an expert in Dragon-Phoenix culture. He delivered an important speech at the seminar. He discussed the concept, significance, and creation of immigrant literature, emphasizing that for Chinese immigrant literature, it is essential to both inherit and promote the essence of excellent Chinese culture while actively drawing and integrating the strengths of Western culture. Through collision, exchange, and mutual learning, a broader and richer literary expression can be formed. Immigrant literature should not be confined to personal wandering, nostalgic memories, and cultural conflicts; it should also incorporate global new trends, new phenomena, and new issues into its literary vision, presenting them artistically and aesthetically. He stated that immigrant literature is born from migration and enriched by exchange. It carries memories of the homeland while reflecting the reality of the host country; it writes about individual destinies while also mirroring the changes of the times. If a proper balance can be struck between national identity and global perspective, and between local experience and a global outlook, immigrant literature will undoubtedly possess a deeper and broader spiritual space and aesthetic potential.

Professor Sun Ruixiang, President of the Canada Gonggong News Agency, is a director of the Chinese-Canadian Writers Association. In his speech, he mentioned three important theoretical dimensions for studying immigrant literature: viewing it from the perspective of intercultural communication theory, adopting the research methods of comparative literature, and incorporating the core viewpoints of reception aesthetics. He elaborated that reception aesthetics advocates for the dynamic generation of a literary work's meaning and value through the reader's act of reading, emphasizing the central and actively creative role of the reader in the process of literary reception. This shift from an author-centered to a reader-centered approach allows literary imagination to take flight and reconfigures the social function of literature.

Wan Mu is an important writer and poet in the Chinese Canadian Writers Association. He believes that past Chinese immigrant literature focused more on longing for relatives in their homeland, nostalgia for their native culture, and had many complaints about racial discrimination in foreign lands. However, with the further development of globalization, Wan Mu points out that the vision of overseas Chinese writers should be further broadened, and the content of immigrant literature should also be further expanded. Chinese writers should not only see the strengths of Chinese immigrants but also recognize certain shortcomings that are incompatible with local society. They should reflect on their own issues in order to integrate into the host country's society as soon as possible and play a more active role in Sino-foreign exchange and cooperation. A few years ago, Mr. Wan Mu wrote two novels about immigrant life, “Overseas Leaders“ and “Media Moguls.” While affirming the contributions of Chinese people to North American society, these two novels also pointed out the problems that immigrants themselves need to improve. These works have been referred to by researchers as Chinese writers' "expository literature" and "problem novels," and have had a significant impact overseas. In addition, Mr. Wan Mu has published two collections of poetry and prose in Canada about immigrant life: "Hometown's Bright Moon, Foreign Land's Frost" and "Vague Dreams of Parting" (purchased and collected by the Princeton University Library), both of which have been well-received.

Zhou Zhihua, Chairman of Jiahua Media and a member of the Canadian Chinese Writers Association, spoke at the seminar, saying that from childhood, he was nourished by literary masterpieces. He says that immigration literature is a topic with great practical significance and broad meaning, especially for the immigrant community itself. He discusses two aspects. Firstly, immigration literature is a literature of survival: in a completely different linguistic, cultural, legal, outlook on life, and professional environment, new immigrants must first seek a living space that suits them. Survival is the most important thing, and living well is even more important. Secondly, immigration literature needs to address the cognitive confusion of immigrants, how they view society, politics, community, family, friends, and the employment environment, all of which will clash and collide with their previous ideas from their home country and their current experiences in the new country.

From left to right: Zhang Yingying, Mandana, Wan Mu, Yan Bo, Hong Tianguo, Sun Ruixiang, Yan Fei, Pang Jin, Zhou Zhihua, Feng Wenjun, Li Yan

Also attending this literary seminar on immigration were experts, scholars, key members of writers associations, and figures from the cultural and arts circles, including: renowned poet and director of the Canada China Writers Association Jiang Ni; directors of the Canada China Writers Association Chen Rong and Qi Yaling; secretaries of the Canada China Writers Association Feng Wenjun, Manduna, and Li Yan; President of the GoldenYears Branch of the Newcomer Society of Canada Li Yaru and Vice President Guo Weida; Leader of the GoldenYears North York Art Troupe Zhang Yingying and Deputy Leader An Honglan; members of the GoldenYears Orchestra and Dance Troupe; Li Min, a producer of Shanghai cuisine, desserts, and nougat; Zhang Xiaoli, inheritor of the Chinese intangible cultural heritage of dough modeling art; and other individuals from all walks of life who are passionate about literature and art.

From left to right: Li Yaru, Zhang Yingying, Yan Daxia, An Honglan, Li Yan, Zhu Jianxin
The Xinhua Golden Years North York Arts Troupe provided venue support and program performances for this immigration literature seminar. Immigrant literature not only records life experiences that transcend national borders but also presents the process of identity reshaping and cultural integration. It transforms individual dispersion and reunion into a shared human spiritual narrative, building understanding amidst differences and discovering the self within others. Immigrant literature expands the vision of civilization, enriches language and expression, promotes dialogue and coexistence among different cultures, and ultimately points to a deeper understanding of humanity and global recognition. Immigrant literature inherently carries a multi-dimensional tension and depth—it writes about both dispersion and arrival, and connects memory and the future; it presents the echoes of individual destinies and reflects the spiritual trajectories of the times. This seminar, at such a height and breadth, brings together ideas, sparks insights, and distills consensus. We have not only witnessed the rich expressions of immigrant literature but also gained a clearer understanding of its unique value in the progress of human civilization.

Looking ahead, may migrant literature continue to be written with a broader perspective and deeper reflection, documenting cross-cultural understanding and resonance, building bridges between different civilizations, and allowing the world to meet in diversity, know each other in difference, and coexist in exchange. May every “departure” become an arrival at a vaster spiritual homeland for humanity.

Congratulations to the Canada-China Writers Association on the passionate and successful conclusion of your Immigration Literature Seminar!

(Photography: Yingyun, Sun Baoli)

[3

post-1989","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-zhongwenzuojia
["GET
