Unwilling to be \u201cat the mercy of that absurd era,\u201d he used his pen to advance from a rural middle school to the county education bureau, then to the provincial newspaper's editorial department, until 1978 when he was admitted to the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as a first-term journalism graduate student. Afterward, he joined the People's Daily as a special correspondent, forging his path and completely changing his fate, gradually becoming a formidable figure among the top journalists in China. His long-form features published in the People's Daily, such as \"A Tragedy That Shouldn't Have Happened\" and \"Waves Washing Sand,\" caused a sensation across the country. His subsequent reportage collections, including \"The Scales Tilted\" and \"A Record of Achievements and Failures,\" set a benchmark for a new style of literary reportage. Concurrently, Hong Tianguo served as a master's supervisor in the journalism department at the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. His book, \"Modern News Writing Techniques,\" remains a textbook for Chinese journalism students to this day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Hong Tianguo's second major life change occurred in 1988. At the age of 42, Hong Tianguo moved from Beijing to Canada to reunite with his wife, who was pursuing her doctorate degree.
