It's a substantial volume of over 300 pages, with endurance and sincerity, it probes reality inwardly. In this magical and absurd era, it's truly like finding a pearl in sand. By the time the Monarch butterfly returns, three generations will have passed – Mr. Leng Xia, with this collection of poems and lyrics, forged through a lifetime of immersion, should evoke such a feeling.

In the fields of Qiongnan, I was young, my spring tunic fluttering.

What I like is mostly the innocence of youthful spring attire fluttering.

In 1981, Leng Xia, a third-year middle school student, traveled alone through cities and counties like Baoting, Wuzhishan, Qiongzhong, Sanya, and Haikou, wandering around the island for over twenty days. Swimming in Dadonghai, he emulated Li Taibai, boldly reciting, “Chasing waves for miles, a song of glory to the heavens,” and “I wish to follow it, and with a flick of my body, enter the gulls.” Passing by the Wuzhishan tea plantation, he imitated the elders, softly chanting, “Village songs faintly rise with the wind, tea baskets full, entering the evening sun.” Stumbling into a Li village, he adopted the persona of a distinguished guest, composing, “Mountains embrace and waters cradle a small Li village, betel nut in the courtyard, bamboo outside. The grandmother, legs crossed, busily embroiders intricate patterns, while the butterfly-catching girl has spring in her lips.” In the early 1980s, middle schooler Leng Xia actually composed many regulated poems and ci, astonishing many and revealing a wild spirit unbound by time or place.

In April 1983, Leng Xia, a second-year high school student at Huangliu Middle School, was captivated by a news article in the Yangcheng Evening News. It announced that the Guangdong Radio School was recruiting for the first-ever integrated news gathering, editing, and broadcasting host class nationwide. During the entrance exams, hundreds of hopefuls from Hainan participated, but only Leng Xia was accepted. Thus, upon receiving his admission letter from Guangzhou, Leng Xia, full of youthful ambition, crossed the sea before graduating. He traveled from Haikou aboard a large passenger ferry to Guangzhou. The 17-year-old poet Leng Xia stood on the deck at the bow of the ship, filled with a surge of heroic emotion as he gazed at the vast ocean: “Farewell to the coconut groves, the initial plan is made, riding the wind and waves across Qiongzhou. From the ship’s bow, I gaze upon the road to success, seeing north, south, east, and west at a single glance.”

With an open mind, the vast mountains and rivers become my song.

A roc rises against the wind, soaring ninety thousand li. After graduating three years later, Leng Xia was assigned to Guangdong Radio and Television Station, where he worked as a reporter, editor, and program producer. In 1993, at the prime age of 27, Leng Xia entered Hong Kong for the first time. On his way to Hong Kong, he recited his ambition: “I will dedicate my heroic feelings to the Bauhinia.”

Upon arriving in Hong Kong, Leng Xia not only engaged in book and magazine editing, publishing, and management, but also frequently studied the world and the Way, writing columns for Hong Kong newspapers. Time passed quickly, and eventually, a thunderous success arrived. In a short span of two to three years, Leng Xia wrote "Memoirs of Fok Ying Tung" and several other biographies, which became bestsellers in Chinese communities worldwide, with a total distribution exceeding one million copies.

During this period, Leng Xia often traveled to Beijing and met prominent figures in theoretical, academic, and journalistic circles during the early stages of China's reform and opening up. Leng Xia absorbed knowledge from diverse sources and engaged in collaborative discussions. As a result, he later founded a non-governmental think tank, focusing on research into Hong Kong and Macau affairs and international relations, and providing consultation to decision-makers. Throughout his journey, he demonstrated lofty ambitions and wrote a legendary tale.

With the dust settled and Leng Xia now settled in Hong Kong, he looks back on the past thirty-odd years and says with deep emotion, “My heart has long belonged to Hong Kong.” Indeed, at the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, Leng Xia penned his feelings: “How could I forget my past life? My home is in Lingnan, called Dongxiang.” His lyrical, light ink, shallow and white, points to profound and far-reaching meaning with his masterful brushstrokes.

And Hong Kong, this tiny island, also made Leng Xia's career. In the dead of night, Leng Xia often felt he hadn't given enough back, hence his lament of “wishing he had the power to protect Hong Kong.”

In fact, over the years, Leng Xia has given over a hundred lectures, participated in more than one hundred seminars, workshops, and exchanges on the formulation of the Hong Kong National Security Law and the legislative issue of Article 23 of the Basic Law of Hong Kong, producing hundreds of thousands of words of related literature. When the husband stands in the right position, he can govern the world.

In fact, as early as the turn of the century, around the time of Macao's return to the motherland, Leng Xia had assisted Mr. Ho Hau Wah in his campaign for the first Chief Executive of Macao and provided brief policy consultations for Mr. Ho Hau Wah's administration. These are all described in detail in Leng Xia's book, "Cold Eyes on Macao." It is said that this political treatise has been recommended by several institutions as one of the best reference books for understanding and researching Macao.

In this light, Leng Xia, if not meritorious, is at least significant to the country. As this is being written, Mr. Leng Xia is attending the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China reception in Beijing. When bestowed with national honor, Leng Xia, with his ambition undiminished, ascended to the Tiananmen Gate Tower and recited, “Ascending the tower, I look back at the imperial realm, the vast landscape becomes my song.” At this moment, sea and waves naturally resonated in sympathy.

Quality of life, knowing for oneself whether it's cold or warm, facing the wind.

Leng Xia gazed far into the distance, embracing all four directions. From now on, a book lover with eccentric habits, clapping their hands and singing loudly, will travel far with a calm heart. Therefore, the "Leng Xia Poetry Collection" released today, compiled over nearly ten years, aims to: 1. Pay attention to the tonal patterns of words and phrases. 2. Be suitable for all ages, appreciated by both refined and common tastes. 3. Feature a unique design. Among these three aims, design is paramount. The cover, with its hard cardboard wrapped in fabric, features a monochromatic dark gray cloth texture with silver and red foil stamping. The inner pages are complemented by the unrestrained and passionate artworks of the master of illusionist painting, Mr. Liu Youju, creating a naturally grand and artistic presentation.

Thus, poetry and wine bloom like flowers, leaving ink across the world. From Mr. Leng Xia, I savor it again and again, and in this process, I experience a qualitative leap, and then another qualitative leap of inexplicable joy.

Mr. Leng Xia settled in Hong Kong's New Territories. Boats were moored in the harbor before his house, with verdant mountains flanking its side. Leng Xia composed a poem that captures its beauty: “The sounds of dogs and birds mingle in the clear air, as dawn's rosy light enters the courtyard. After the fishing boats rested last night, the oar's movement and the gulls” songs guide my way."

Seeing Leng Xia, he, with a bowl of tea, or a cup of wine, enjoying a leisurely moment between heaven and earth, wrote the Ci poem “Drunk in the Flower Shade: Tuberose”: "In the small courtyard by the desk, flowers and leaves are dense. I forgot when they were planted. Spring rain or autumn wind, they've long been treasured friends. How can you not understand? The sudden warmth and lingering chill stir the heart, and love is indulged as promised. You know I love to light the lamp and wait for the deep night, when the gentle fragrance arrives with the late hours." This Ci poem, born by the river, far from the mortal world, allowing the light drizzle to drift, evokes a tender pity.

Only after loving plants would I go, and then I would regret returning animals. This summer's lingering heat gifted me a lyric for my beloved dog, cherished dearly: “Drunk in the courtyard then, my dog kept watch beside me. A few barks were all I needed to feel safe. Dancing when we parted, ten years unchanged. If only we could meet in dreams, I'd tell you everything about home.” In that instant, I was lost in thought, my heart and the void one.

The warmth and cold in my heart are like a cold summer. I don't know what worldly affairs are, only because I am in this situation. In the winter of 2017, Leng Xia, with his wife, visited friends in the capital and wrote a sentimental poem: “Last night, we drank lightly in a pavilions, and the swallows” chirping dispelled our loneliness. The rustling disturbed the spring night, and indeed snowflakes began to fall. A promise, a promise, let's walk hand in hand at Fragrant Hills. "Yes, during a casual drink in the capital, we talked about how if the first snow arrived tomorrow, I would definitely promise to take you to see the snow at Fragrant Hills; sure enough, the first snow arrived the next day, and I kept my word, taking you to see the snow at Fragrant Hills.

In the spring of 2020, Leng Xia and his wife, along with old acquaintances, revisited the plum blossom forest in Luogang, a small town in Guangzhou. Overcome with emotion, he penned a poem after a drink: “My affection first blossomed at our initial meeting in Luogang, and ever since, I've always missed it during the spring. As I see the plum blossoms, they remind me of all my old companions. Does the fragrance of the snow know that an old friend has returned?” Yes, old people, old things, old times. I rely on an old scent to welcome spring back.

Mid-Autumn Festival 2022, Lengxia on the balcony of his home in Hong Kong, a cup of tea, a mooncake, waiting to capture the moment the bright moon appears, as if shy and intoxicated. Spending the Mid-Autumn Festival with such leisure, playing with the moon, harmonizing like zither and lute, is deeply moving. I remember the moon's colors were red, white, yellow, and blue, extremely strange. Lengxia said this was related to the human eye, the weather, and the clouds. I feel it should be related to a free-spirited temperament, and connected to a poetic existence.

Yes, the quality of life is related to "knowing warmth and cold for oneself," and even more so to "poetic dwelling." However, how to achieve poetics still lies in the heart's "warmth and cold," and poetics will appear naturally with the rhythm of life. In 2023, Leng Xia renovated his home in Hong Kong. During this renovation, he created his favorite fireplace in the main living room, bringing the warmest ambiance. From then on, Leng Xia and his family in Hong Kong gather around the roaring fire, leisurely watching the orchids bloom.

A shallow courtyard, a spoonful of soup carries a long story.

The flower blooms in two parts, each telling its own story. Not only the home in Hong Kong, but also the house in Hainan, is as pure and elegant as dust being brushed away, placed high in the clouds.

During the 2022 pandemic year, Leng Xia stayed in his mother's hometown in southwestern Hainan Province, at Run Sheng Yuan, to accompany his mother. At that time, Leng Xia's favorite thing to listen to was his mother's southwestern Hainan accent. Leng Xia's mother, nearly a hundred years old, had eight children. "How many grandchildren do you have?" Leng Xia, the youngest son, playfully asked. Leng Xia's mother smiled and didn't answer. It wasn't due to old age or poor eyesight, but rather a desire not to keep track of them all. In her twilight years, she lived a life of ease and contentment, peacefully enjoying heaven's grace.

While Leng Xia's son bathed in warmth and grace, he often picked fragrant jasmine flowers from Run Sheng Yuan. When fresh, he'd arrange them on a plate, savoring the scent of spring. When dried, he'd brew a pot of tea for friends and family. His days were beautiful, as gentle as a breeze.

I am deeply moved. Mr. Leng Xia has already been brisk walking and jogging for an hour around the front garden at Runsheng Garden.

A different kind of life is knowing how to invest unique drive and passion while leisurely observing things. This is just like Run Sheng Yuan, which Leng Xia is building brick by brick—

For the cool summer, they invited an experienced painter who, through cleaning, polishing, sanding, and waxing, brought back the antique and substantial look of an old eight-immortal table that had borne a family's century of vicissitudes and was almost unrecognizable.

Leng Xia would grab a handful of yellow mud from his hometown in southwestern Qiong, fire it into a few jars and pots at the town's kiln, and then place them on the tea table for display. He said that the earthenware could hold tea leaves, dried fruits, and snacks, but even empty, they were elegantly rustic. Leng Xia connected electricity to the long-unused fish pond, filled it with water, planted grass, flowers, and raised turtles. The flowing water gurgled, bringing a sense of vibrancy and cool serenity to the summer. The wax apple tree Leng Xia planted was lush and leafy, bearing abundant fruit. After the wind and rain, the fruits fell with the leaves, one a vibrant red, another a lush green, filling the ground with fragrance. All of these small delights led to grand achievements, and tender affections forged a strong character. I even sentimentally called Rùnshēng Yuàn the Monet's Garden of Hainan residences.

On April 8, 2023, Leng Xia's mother passed away peacefully at her home in Ruishengyuan. Mr. Leng Xia, along with his entire family, tearfully wrote this obituary, set up a memorial service, and held a heartfelt funeral. During this time, Leng Xia personally composed elegies for his mother. The couplets for the main gate read: “Jasmine blossoms reflect your will; bamboo leaves fall, mourning my mother.” The couplets for the courtyard read: “A lifetime of toil never stopped, you managed the household with virtue; three lifetimes of kindness are hard to repay, longing for you without end.” The couplets for the living room read: “The main hall is now dim; all humble souls are filled with sorrow.” The couplets for the memorial hall read: “How can all endless regrets be mended? A handful of your loving face is sought in dreams.” With such poetic eulogies and such literary tributes, Leng Xia's mother, honored in life and in death, has a son who has no regrets.

We are from Qiong Nan Yazhou, “Farming can cultivate a starry galaxy, and studying can explore vast lands and rivers” – these lyrics written by Leng Xia for his hometown sing of genuine hometown feelings. Take Mr. Leng Xia's younger daughter, Zhuo Ying, for example. In 2023, the beautiful and intelligent Zhuo Ying was admitted to Oxford University in the UK and received a full scholarship. On the eve of his youngest daughter's departure for Britain, Run Sheng Yuan hosted a poetic banquet with wine and music. Leng Xia did not forget to compose a poem with his hopes: “Embarking on the journey to Oxford to fulfill dreams, Zhuo Ying must cherish her youth. A humble banquet in the bamboo grove repays friends and relatives, the zither's melody and clear singing fill the night. Though you go to Britain to seek the profound, remember your country and serve the wise. Tonight, let this be a farewell gift, may the hometown moon always shine upon your comings and goings.” With such a father and such a daughter, the tides come to level both shores, and the wind blows a light sail.

Good rain knows its season, and bursts forth in spring. The spring rain of 2024 watered all things silently, and Leng Xia made another trip to Europe. It is only in a foreign land that one can love their hometown more. Mr. Leng Xia also approached me with a cup of Chinese homesickness—

In Strasbourg, a border city in France, whether it's veal thymus or French snails, Leng Xia always feels that Chinese cuisine tastes better; In Venice, Italy, facing the charming water town scenery, Leng Xia exclaims, “My eyes are filled with my Jiangnan, my Lingnan, my Qiongnan”; In the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford University, most of the precious cultural relics were plundered from China by colonialists, and Leng Xia laments, "History is the list of victors, and also national hatred..." Throughout this life, China, Hong Kong, Hainan, the cradles where I was born and raised, have gently carried the pure-hearted Leng Xia.

The light rain stops, the summer breeze is gentle. Approaching his sixtieth year, a cool summer arrives, bringing him countless cool summers in his life. A cheerful, childlike tune spontaneously arises: “The slight heat meets mist and rain, a joyful heart makes one half-immortal. Tenderly asking the birds and sparrows, to carry me into the clouds.”

Talking and laughing about the harvest, cordially welcoming the triumphant one. The traditional Chinese version of “Cold Summer Poems and Lyrics” is published as scheduled. Beautiful, oh so beautiful. Sit or recline as you please; the heart only needs to appreciate a flourishing tree, no need to mention the extraneous details. Then, turning to Mr. Cold Summer's calligraphy, his brushstrokes are elegant and free-flowing, his characters born from emotion, forming a style of their own. “Having experienced the vast ocean, the heart yearns for a tranquil bay; having endured worldly vanities, the affections return to a half-acre of new lotus.” This is a couplet composed and written by Cold Summer himself, and with this, I conclude.

Zhang Xiaoyun, female, is currently a member of the Chinese Writers Association and a director of the Hainan Writers Association.
